Project Overview

Problem Statement

Design a new Sonos product (other than a speaker) that appeals to one of our five senses and that can be used in conjunction with the current Sonos system to enhance the mood of a given moment and promote well-being within the confines of a home.

Role

This was a collaborative group project between Purdue IDSA and Sonos Inc. I held the position of a partnering student design lead, serving as a liaison between Purdue IDSA and the Sonos design team. My primary responsibilities consisted of:

Directed and managed a group of 20 industrial design students who were all collaboratively working on this project.
Set the strategic direction for the team
Lead the development of the User Experience(UX) aspect of the product.

App Development

After finalizing a physical form factor and its features, I then lead the development of an app and digital system that accompanies our product. We designed new features within the existing Sonos app that would accompany that smart home features of our product.

Concept Refinement and Final Delivery

As part of a collaborative effort involving three groups, our product was integrated with the other two designs created by the other groups This synergy resulted in a cohesive and innovative smart home product line for Sonos, delivering a unified experience that aligns with the brand's vision and user needs.

Reflection

This project marked my first opportunity to apply the design skills I developed in the classroom to a real-world scenario. It was an incredible learning experience that allowed me to lead a team, collaborate cross-functionally with other teams within both our club and the Sonos organization, and tackle practical challenges in product design. The cohesive smart home product line we delivered surpassed the expectations of the Sonos team and received high praise.
